104.2×24.8×22. 8 cm (41×9 3/4×9 in)
This narrow, rectangular k'ang table is sturdily constructed with a thick,single-board top that has everted flanges and a deep apron. A feeling of solidity is created by its resemblance to a full-size,recessed-leg altar table, whose design it follows. The framed ends, with pierced panels of ling-chih :(fungus)design (fig. a),give added strength to the form.
The low height and stable construction suggest that this table could serve equally well as a footstool. However, while few extant examples of similar footstools exist, there are surviving narrow k'ang tables of varying heights, lengths, and styles. The Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture has a three-drawer k'ang table of similar dimensions (Bartholomew I992,p. 43,fig. 15)and the Dr. S. Y. Yip collection has a plank-top k'ang table of related form (Bruce 1991,p.9o,no. 32). Wang Shixiang illustrates two slightly higher k'ang tables from the Summer Palace (Wang Shixiang 1986,PP. 120-21,pls. 68 and 69),as well as others from private collections (Wang Shixiang 1986,PP. 122-24,pls. 7o and 71).
