64.2×62.2×99 cm (25 1/4×24 1/2×39 in)
This is an extremely well-proportioned pair of tall wood-hinged cabinets. superb book-matched single boards have been used for the doors and sides, each framed by rounded members subtly accented with a flat trim. The rounded vertical posts are framed in restrained style with simple straight aprons and plain rounded spandrels between the feet.
Without a central post, cupboards of this type were not intended to be secured with locks. The height of these cabinets indicates that they would not have had separate stands. Although lower cabinets would probably have had stands, they were a matter of personal preference or an optional addition within the commission.
Most Chinese furniture-probably all those of major hardwoods-were specifically commissioned. In the Ming tradition, furniture was selected from books of drawings at the cabinetmaker's premises and made to the proportions required. This would also have led to personal preferences between plain and ornately carved furniture,in the expression of stylistic choices in decorative vocabulary, and even in the selection of soft furnishings like bed hangings, drapery, chair coverings as well as the weave-patterns of seat matting.
There is a similar pair of cabinets in the Dr. S. Y. Yip collection (see Bruce 1991,no. 47)
