A PAIR OF HUANGHUALI TAPERED-STILE CABINETS(Late Ming Period - Early Kangxi period)

78×46.5×152.5 cm (30 3/4×18 1/4×60 in)

The table has a two-board floating panel within a double cushion-edged square frame. Below,a flush apron with further double-cushioned molding, carved to simulate four horizontal strips of pliant bamboo, wraps around the table. The fourth strip is slightly hump-backed and leads to open corner spandrels. Thick rounded legs carved as upright lengths of bamboo provide support.
A clear indication of the quality of this piece is the special attention paid in carving false 'bamboo' nodes to all members. Expensive huanghuali hardwood was carved away to leave protuberant nodes at regular intervals, some with details of nascent shoot-tips. The subtle widening of the nodes through the length of the legs complete the illusion of maturing lengths of the much cheaper and more utilitarian bamboo, leaving a strong sense of the organic in this outstanding yet simple structure.
Only a handful of pieces in this style are known, and the largest may be a long elm wood painting table, formerly from the collection of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and now in the Robert H. Ellsworth collection.
