A HUANGHUALI ROUND CORNER CABINET(Kangxi period)

86.4×37.5×114.6 cm (34×14 3/4×45 1/8 in)

Although this tapered cabinet is similar to the preceding examples in both construction and style,it has shorter and wider proportions and lacks a central post. The interior reveals an unusual configuration of five pairs of drawers of increasing heights below an open internal compartment. However, the lower four pairs of drawers show indications of having been added later;horizontal butt-joins along the vertical posts separate the drawers, and the members framing the top pair are of a different width from the rest below.
The drawer fronts reveal exposed dovetail tenons which may have been intentional to match the fronts of storage boxes placed on the upper compartment (see no. 96 in this volume),or alternatively the drawer fronts were replaced or repaired by a less-skilled cabinet-maker.
It is comparable to a slightly smaller cabinet in the Robert H. Ellsworth collection (Ellsworth 1970,pl. 123.)
