The unusual use of lacquer and mother-of-pearl to decorate the surface of porcelain vessels and dishes first made its appearance in the Kangxi period but remained popular well into the later 18th century. An example of a square dish decorated in the same technique，was included in the exhibition 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer，Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and Art Gallery，the Chinese University of Hong Kong，1993，pp. 184-5，no. 96.
