A RARE LAC BURGAUTE BLACK-GROUND PORCELAIN VASE

The unusual use of lacquer and mother-of-pearl to decorate the surface of porcelain vessels and dishes first made its appearance in the Kangxi period but remained popular well into the later 18th century. An example of a square dish decorated in the same technique,was included in the exhibition 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer,Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and Art Gallery,the Chinese University of Hong Kong,1993,pp. 184-5,no. 96. Compare,also,a lac burgaute ‘landscape jar’ sold at Sotheby’s London,6 November 2013,lot 368.
