The present vase belongs to a small group of Qianlong-marked vases that follow on from the Kangxi tradition of gilt decoration on monochrome powder-blue vases. The fine, but relatively restrained, decoration on the present vase suggests that it can probably be dated to the early part of the Qianlong period.
Another gilt-decorated blue vase, also bearing an underglaze-blue Qianlong sealmark,in the Palace Museum,Beijing,is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, vol. 37,Monochrome Porcelain,Hong Kong,1999,no. 86. Other vases from this group include an example included in the Special Exhibition of K’ang-hsi,Yung-cheng and Ch’ien-lung Porcelain Ware from the Ch’ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum,National Palace Museum,Taipei,1986,cat. no. 79;and a vase illustrated in Gems of the Official Kilns,Taipei,1993,pl. 90. For related vases sold at auction, compare the present example with a double-gourd vase sold at Sotheby’s New York,23 September 1995,lot 472 and again from the J.M. Hu Collection,Sotheby’s London,16 June 1999,lot 883,and most recently at Sotheby’s London,6 November 2013,lot 158;and a small ‘Bajixiang’ vase with a Qianlong iron-red sealmark sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong,8 October 2010,lot 2602.
