A RARE STONE CARVING OF MANJUSHRI

52 cm.(20 1/2 in.)high


The Bodhisattva Manjushri is shown seated on a lion seated in lalitasana with one leg pendant. His hands are held in the two-handed teaching gesture,dharmacakra mudra. The bodhisattva is flanked on the left by the youth Suhana with his hands in the anjali mudra gesture and on the right by the wrathful Yamantaka. Surrounding Manjushri are five Tathagatas against a plain backplate. Below,near the base of the sculpture,two donors are depicted.
Pala period representation of Manjusri are extremely rare and very few examples appear to have been published. A significantly larger example from a private collection,depicting a very similar scene,but with a more elaborate base,was included in the exhibition at the Voelkinger Huette World Heritage Site,Buddha,2016,cat.no. 44.
