82 cm.(32 1/4 in.)high
The face is imbued with a sense of calm serenity expressed in the thoughtful and dignified pose. The rounded and supple face is depicted with an angelic quality, the lips slightly parted in a gentle smile below the high forehead and hair arranged in tight curls. This image presents the Buddha sitting cross-legged,the right leg folded on to the left, and performing with his right hand the Bhumisparsha mudra, the earth touching gesture. This gesture represents the moment of the Buddha's awakening as he claims the earth as the witness of his enlightenment. The left hand is laid in his lap facing upwards in Dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation. The cranial protuberance(usnisa)is surmounted by a tall tiered flame.
This exceptionally finely cast Buddha is particularly notable for its monumental size and elegant features, and can be stylistically associated with the post-Bayon period. Large scale bronze figures that can be attributed to this stylistic period appear to be exceptionally rare. For a 14th-15th century large scale example from Myanmar clad with similar robes form the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection, now in the Asia Society,New York, see D. Leidy,Treasures of Asian Art,New York,1994,p. 93,fig. 75.
