A FINELY CARVED WHITE JADE FIGURE OF A RECUMBENT RAM(Han Dynasty(202 BC-AD 220))

9.5cm.(3 3/4 in.)wide

Provenance
The Collection of Raymond and Frances Bushell, acquired in the early 1990s

Lustrous and delicate white jade with color suffusions. Carved in a recumbent posture, the goat has its four limbs reclining beneath the belly. It raises its head with round eyes looking forward in a peaceful and placid manner. The facial features are incised and the two horns curl and bend at the two sides of the head. At the corner of one side are traces of drilling. The areas beneath the neck, the back and the two sides of the body are decorated with engraved parallel lines to suggest the goat’s hairs. The thick and short tail curls slightly upwards with toes clearly defined. The carving techniques are neatly rendered with sculptural modeling of the body to show the enlivened peaceful animal with a sense of tranquility.
Compared to a ram illustrated in Jades of Han Dynasty from the Collection of Aurora Art Museum,Taiwan,2005,p. 205,no. 137,(fig.1),and another from the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum,Jade 4,Han,Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties,2001,p.217,no. 272,(fig.2). The Aurora Art Museum and Beijing Palace Museum rams both have straight horns.
