Lustrous, translucent and shiny white jade with partial deep russet suffusions. The cup is modeled in cylindrical form with the inside hollow. The exterior side is decorated from the upper to the lower body with designs of clouds and thunder, interlocking clouds and swirling cloud patterns respectively. This type of cup is known as a “morning dew cup” and was a vessel used for imbibing herbs and medical treatments in the quest for immortality and everlasting life by members of the imperial family and regional rulers. Emperor Wu had built the “Boliang Terrace” on which a basin container is placed to keep dew. The cup was put inside the basin container to collect dew which was then mixed with jade ashes and consumed in the quest for immortality.
A similar jade beaker with a handle in the Taipei Palace Museum,is published in “The National Palace Museum Entering the New Millennium”,Taipei,January 2000,p. 54.(fig.1)
