The broad，tapering body raised on a circular foot decorated with a rope-twistborder，the rope-twist design continuing on the upper body arranged to form alattice of rectangular panels enclosing a dense pattern of kui dragons，the broadshoulder interrupted at either side by two ‘S’-shaped mythical beast handles.
A closely comparable fou vessel，with slight differences in the designs within therope-twist borders，is in the collection of Compton Verney Art Gallery & Park，Ref. no. CVCSC 0377. A. See，also a very example sold at Christie's Amsterdam，November 6，2011，lot 334. Two related fou vessels，the first lacking the handlesfound on the above examples，are illustrated by J. So，Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzesfrom the Arthur M. Sackler Collections，1995，p. 217，no. 34 and pp. 218-219，no. 34
where the author dates the second vessel to the 6th Century BC and notes thatthe rope-twist borders are characteristic of vessels found between Shanxi toHebei. Another example of similar form but slightly different decoration，wassold at Christie's New York，March 21，2014，lot 2019.
The dating of this lot is consistent with technical examination report no.
0717-OA-45N-3 carried out by CIRAM.
