Of a shape that was popular from the mid-Warring States to the Western Han,this hemispherical cooking vessel has a pair of slightly splayed side ears and three short stout legs while the convex fitted cover is cast with three equidistant rings for knobs. Along the rim is a ten-character inscription identifying the vessel to be a Huguan bronze tripod with a volume of five sheng and a weight of two catties. Another inscription containing no more than the characters “hu” and “guan” is found on the underside. The ding-tripod is by far the most numerous and most important among Shang and Zhou bronzes. Its selfinscribed names have been established to number as many as over 130 (Zhang Yachu, “Yin-Zhou Qingtongding Qiming, Yongtu Zonghe Yanjiu,” distributed at the Sixth Annual Conference of Chinese Paleography, September, 1986),some of which serve to specify its uses dialectally or homophonically.
The inscription further makes it an invaluable specimen for researches into the weights and measures of the Western Han dynasty.
