Supported by a stemmed ring foot, this vessel for serving food has a flanged cover that forms a compressed sphere with the body. Crowning the cover is a low ring handle. Around the handle and on the rim are copper inlays of encircling rugged curves. Decorated with triangular cloud scrolls, two ring ears, one on each side, jut out from the belly, which is covered with two copper inlaid friezes of rugged curves. Of the two friezes, the upper one is wider and sparser in design. Of the four bands of copper inlay on the cover and body, only the rugged curves on the upper belly are vertically arranged and hence the most conspicuous. The cover, especially on the interior, emits a golden sheen.
Inlays on bronzes originated from the mid to late Spring and Autumn periods.
Although much simpler in decoration than the complex hunting scenes, the present lot with copper inlay testifies to the dawn of a technology that was to flourish in the Warring States period.
