With the cover lost, this squat container for serving food is oblong in shape and has a slightly contracted mouth with a flanged rim. Decorated with rugged curves, the slightly flared ring foot has a rectangular indentation on each side. Cast with a pair of side ears, the belly is encircled by a band of double oblongs in the upper part and tiles in the lower part. The interior of the bottom bears a 48-character inscription in six columns.

The present lot has long caught scholarly attention and was named according to its inscription (See Chen Zhaorong, Guwenzi yu Gudaishi, vol. 1 Taipei, Institute of History and Philology Academia Sinica, 2007, pp. 220-221). It was later renamed as it is now by Wu Zhenfeng, who further pointed out that 05664 and 05665 were duplicates of the same piece (Shangzhou Qingtongqi Mingwen ji Tuxiang Jicheng, Shanghai, 2012, book 12).

Showing a dark patina and well proportioned, the present lot is datable to sometime between mid and late Western Zhou from the double oblongs and tiles typical of the period. The neat inscription is particularly valuable for researches into the history of the dynasty.
