According to Zheng Xuan’s annotation to Zhouli (Rites of the Zhou), the bo-bell is a bigger variation of the zhong-bell. Existing specimens inscribed as “bo” and archeological finds suggest, however, that zhong-bells often have an arched base whereas the bo-bells a flat one despite the similar shape. In other words, the distinguishing characteristic lies in this particular feature rather than the size. Bo-bells have been found individually or as a sequential set like the zhong-bells. Because of the affinities between the two, bo-bells are sometimes referred to as bozhong-bells.

This musical instrument is level at both the top and the base, with the front and the back converging at the spines. The crown is in the form of two confronting dragons that look back on their coiled tails to support a loop for hanging. Dragons also cover the top, which is heavily encrusted. The upper portion bears 18 spiral bosses arranged in rows that alternate with bands of interlaced stylized hydras, a decoration that first appeared in the late Spring and Autumn period and prevailed in the early and mid Warring States periods. The striking area is decorated with stylized kui-dragons.

The shape and especially the double-dragon loop at the top are similar to eight bo-bells with inscription. The presence of interlaced stylized hydras, however, supports dating to the early or mid Warring States period.
