Literature:
Shanghai Museum, The Legacy of Chu Chong-yee: Ancient Chinese Bronzes in the Jiu Ru Yuan Collection, Shanghai, Shanghai Cishu Press, 2017 , no. 62
Provenance:
Collection of Chu’s Jiu Ru Yuan, acquired in the 1980s, Hong Kong

(1) The Mao has the motif of chilong on the ridge and two groups of pierced tadpole motifs are separated along with the blade. (2) The Shu with slim and flat blade, two edges was designed upon the ridge, with no pattern or motif on the blade and joint. (3) Relatively short and cast with a sharp triangular tip, the lance head resembles that of a three-edged mao-spear. The base of the stem is decorated with a band of braided rope below a pair of corresponding holes and a frieze of interlocking stylized dragons in high relief. The presence of mould join lines on both sides suggests that the stem is cast with two pieces of composite moulds. Occasionally referred to with a variant Chinese character in bamboo slips, the shu-lance was in fact a sharp-edged weapon. It is counted by Zheng Xuan to be one of the five weapons employed by the army in his commentaries to “Offices of Summer” in Rites of Zhou (“Xiaguan Sima”, Zhouli). Fitted with such a generally short yet sharp-tipped and side-edged head, the lance can be used for hacking to function like a spear. Carrying a greenish patina, the present specimen is characteristic of combat weapons dating from the Warring States period.
