Huanghuali waisted side table(Early Qing Period)

79cm×85.5cm×38cm (31 1/8×33 5/8×15 in)

Made of huanghuali wood, with the framed two-board, flush floating panel supported on the underside by three transverse stretchers, the frame edge neatly beaded and molded inward towards the elegantly arched aprons, continuing to four slender legs of square section, terminating in well-articulated inward-curving hoof feet. This table exhibits the best features of a cabinetmaker’s solution to maximize load-bearing ability while conserving material without sacrificing appearance. The cabinetmaker didn’t use arched stretchers connecting the legs or S-shaped braces on the corners of the underside though they could provide additional support to further disperse weight and brace the legs. The length of the top requires bracing to prevent the center from sagging, and this is accomplished by delicate aprons that extends across the entire lower edge of the table top, anchored into spandrels at the join of the legs. It is an ingenious solution that is elegant, conserves material, and enhances the appearance of the table.
The cusped apron on the present lot is common in side tables and kang tables. The lines of apron and legs give a sense of simplicity and elegance.
