Pair of Huanghuali southern official’s hat armchairs(Early Qing Period)

110.5cm×61cm×55cm (43 1/2×24×21 3/4 in)

Superbly crafted, gracefully shaped and well-proportioned, this pair of southern official’s hat armchairs made of quality huanghuali wood has an understated elegance and untiring charm to it. The undecorated convex surface combines with the curved top rail and the S-shaped back splat and arms to contribute to its overall attractive contours. The top rail is hidden mortised and tenoned into the stiles which continue through the seat frame to become the back legs. For extra comfort, the arms are pronouncedly curved outward while the seat is made from soft woven cane. On three sides underneath the seat are n-shaped aprons which are unadorned except for the beaded edges. Between the legs are stretchers, the side ones of which are slightly higher than those in front and at the back. As a pair, the chairs make a tasteful statement for any interior.
