Chicago millionaire Avery Brundage, who was a major collectorof Asian art, donated part of his collection of Asian art to SanFrancisco on the condition that the city build a new museumto house it. The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco openedin 1966 as a wing to the M.H. Young Memorial Museum in theGolden Gate Park.An identical example in carved limestone,formerly in the Jingyatang collection, subsequently sold at‘Treasures of Chinese Buddhist Sculpture’, Sotheby’s New York, 20March 2018, lot 204.
