Pair of Huanghuali Low-back Armchairs

58.4×45.1×82.5 cm (23×17 3/4×32 1/2 in . ) [2]

出版:《洪氏所藏木器百圖》(Chinese Furniture: One Hundred and Three Examples from the Mimi and Raymond Hung Collection),圖22,Privately Published•New York•1996,第85頁。
The standard low-back armchair has a single back apron of three sides. This pair of chairs, which is otherwise a classic type, differs from the norm because it has back and arm openings that are framed on all four sides by a mitered apron. A group of low-back chairs with similar four-part aprons can be seen lining the wall of the Shu-fang chai in the Palace Museum, Peking (Wang Shixiang 1986, pp. 46-47, pl. 1). The apron on the back and sides of the Hung chair creates a finely articulated, serpentine-shaped opening that is bordered by a molded edge. The aprons on the front and side legs reiterate in modified form the cusped opening of the top aprons. These chairs were designed for soft-seat construction and now have hard-mat seats, but they retain their original curved and half-lapped transverse braces.
