Brushpots are exceedingly difficult to date and many examples of foliate form have been recarved from plain, circular brushpots. When recarving has occurred, the walls of the brushpot become particularly thin. Such is not the case with this generously proportioned example, which has a wide, overhanging rim and six-lobed, foliate shape that echoes the undulating pattern of the beautifully figured huang hua-li grain. The shape of the projecting rim, which is thumb molded on its upper surface, is reiterated in the convex, molded outer edge of the base. The brushpot is slightly elevated on low bracket feet, a detail that, together with its foliate shape, adds a subtle note of feminine elegance to a scholarly object.
