Classics Elements all Integrated in One Presented by Maya Hewitt
Maya Hewitt's paintings have a strong mystical style. She was born in the UK, raised by her mother, who is Filipino, and her father, who is a prominent British economist. Her father traveled often when she was little, and brought home decorations and accessories from all over the world. Those items represented different cultures and aesthetics, which inspired Maya in her later painting career. After graduating from Fine Art University of Brighton and Camberwell College of Arts, she went to Nagoya University in Japan to extend her study in art. Influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e painting, she formed her unique style of painting, which is avant-garde, mysterious, and full of allegory to the viewers. Maya has held exhibitions in galleries in London, Paris, Ireland, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Taipei. She was also selected to the Tokyo Wonder Site artist-in-residence program in 2009, and work has collected by the “Me Collector Room” foundation in Berlin.
In the Herbalist, rich colors such as orange, Prussian blue, and blackish green are used to portrait in the general picture. Oriental elements like four-legged stools, chopsticks in a steel bucket, and green stainless steel thermos bottle… are detailed observations from eyes of the artist. In this work, the artist applied cold white tones to the gloss on the objects, which creates a glooming atmosphere to her characters. Bright colors and white lightings contrast each other, telling a sense of dramatic vibe in reality. At the center of the painting, the girl is distorted, and carried by her mother like a suitcase. They were brought to the herbalist with stony looks, seeking for consultations, luring the audience about the story behind. In this painting, Maya Hewitt offers a vivid view of “the West's perspective to the East”, a scenery of life mixing reality and fantasy in mysticism, creates an everlasting impression
