Hot Youth, Forever Rock and Roll!
Godfather of American Pop Art × British Rock Legend

“In the future, everyone will have a 15-minute chance of becoming famous!” is a famous saying by the Godfather of Pop Art, Andy Warhol, in the 1970s. He accurately anticipated the rise of reality TV and social networks. From the trendy culture to the popularity of NFT, all of these reflect the values that Warhol advocated throughout his life, “art should not be unattainable. It should return to daily life and be integrated with the era of commodity consumption.” In 1962, Warhol switched from commercial advertising design to artistic creation. He boldly took images from the mass media as the basic elements of his creation. Through transforming them into Pop Art through repeated arrangement and screen printing, he defined the three essential elements of Pop Art, “mass production replication, commercialization, and popularity”, which ensured his leading position in the art world.

Joint Produc tion with Superstar, Counterattack Legend of Ordinary People

In the 1970s, an abstract expressionist painting form combined with screen printing once again appeared in Warhol's creations. One of them is the portrait work of the lead singer of the American rock group The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger. Warhol and Jaeger have a very close friendship. The cooperation between the two lasted from 1963 to the 1970s when both became famous. In 1971, the Rolling Stones released one of the most highly rated albums in the history of the band, Sticky Fingers. The album cover with real zippers on skinny jeans came from Warhol and has become a topic that has lasted forever. In 1975, Warhol selected 10 Polaroid photos he took of Jagger and made them into silkscreen prints. Mick Jagger presented in this auction is the most popular work among them. The signatures of Jaeger and Warhol are at the bottom of the work, becoming the first print in the art history on which the painter and figure painted jointly and equally signed. The painting not only records the cooperation of the two superstars, but also becomes an inspirational legend of ordinary people striving for ideals to realize the American Dream, which affects ordinary people all over the world!

As the lead singer of the rock troupe, besides his unique voice and stage charm, Jagger's sexy red lips turn thousands of girls crazy, which is also the origin of the band's classic “red lips and big mouth” logo. The stylist of the band, John Pasche, recalls that when he first walked into the office of the Rolling Stones in 1971, he was fascinated by the big mouth and thick lips of Jagger at the first glance. Therefore, he simply took it directly and used the extended tongue to symbolize the challenge to the authority. Only the work presented in this auction among the total 10 prints captures Jagger's red lips in a front portrait. Warhol applies iconic lines and torn paper color blocks on Jagger's eyes and lips, highly saturated with bright colors. The bright red, pink, and green blocks like the marks of highlighter, showing Jagger's unruly personality and hippie-like lazy sexy. The golden blocks in the background enter diagonally from the left, as if recording the golden years of rock music.
