14×8.5×13.5 cm (5 1/2×3 3/8×5 3/8 in )
This box has been hollowed out of a single rectangular block of zitan. It has slightly rounded corners and edges with a matching low cover set into a raised interior lip and secured by a pair of rectangular brass strap-hinges. The mouths of the cover and box are accented with matching thick molded trim. There is a square brass lock-plate at the front, and set on the narrow sides is a pair of flattened brass loops. The box can be used as a portable purse when a strap is threaded through the loops and under the side.
Single-block wood containers are extremely rare, and even more so in precious zitan. The presence of the brass loops on the present container strongly suggests it was intended for portability-probably an innovative special commission, for which there is no other published example.
