Classic Furniture from The Hung Collection

195
Early Qing Period
JUJUBE WOOD HAND HOLDER OR HEAD REST

19.7×10.6×12.4 cm (7 3/4×4 1/8×4 7/8 in)

The pillow and headrest has been constructed in the form of a small recessed-leg stool or bench with an evenly curved concave top, a grooved outer edge and paired splayed legs secured by a beaded cusped apron with scrolled spandrels. The outer surfaces of the legs and paired braces are all thumb-molded between double ribs.
The cutting of the squared and rounded aprons indicates an early Kangxi date, and similarly, the flattened scrolls and the reeded legs are motifs of that period. The treatment of the legs may be compared with those on of larger altar tables in the Hung collection (see vol. I, 1996, nos. 60 & 62).
