Literature:
Shanghai Museum, The Legacy of Chu Chong-yee: Ancient Chinese Bronzes in the Jiu Ru Yuan Collection, Shanghai, Shanghai Cishu Press, 2017 , no. 18& 43&44&45
Provenance:
Collection of Chu’s Jiu Ru Yuan, acquired in the 1980s, Hong Kong

(1) Yue-axe shaped implement with tubular shaft ring
Western Zhou Overall length: 13 cm Length of shaft ring: 9.8 cm
Oblong in shape, the implement has a thick blunt edge and a tubular shaft ring. Both ends of the ring are bounded by a raised ferrule. One of the two ends is topped by a ring for stringing to help keep the implement in place. Enclosing three circles, two triangles defined by raised lines emerge from the blade onto the shaft ring. Projecting from the back of the shaft ring is possibly a human head. As far as the tubular shaft ring is concerned, there is an example housed in the Shanghai Museum (Ma Chengyuan, Zhongguo Qingtongqi, Shanghai, 2009. P. 47, Plate 9) although the edge, back of the shaft ring and length of the shafting plate are different. Judging from its blunt edge, the present specimen should have been used as a ritual or burial object rather than a combat weapon.

(2) Chariot or harness ornament with interlocking dragons
Spring and Autumn Period Length: 7.5 cm Width at middle: 2.5 cm Length of shaft: 2.5 cm
Oblong in shape, the specimen has interlocking dragons in openwork bordered by two raised bow strings on the rim. A short shaft projects from one side in the middle.

(3) Set of three ornaments with animal masks
Spring and Autumn Period Length: 8 cm Width: 5.5 cm
The three ornaments in the set are identical in both size and the overall “m” shape. At the top is an animal mask with protruding round eyes. A pair of horns sprouts from above, curving down in opposite directions onto the sides before spiraling inwards over a small squared frame of double-rings.

(4) Accessory with three beasts
Spring and Autumn Period Width: 5 cm Height: 5.7 cm
Small in size, this piece of accessory has a fragmented arched top and a square bottom. An openwork of three mythical beasts in dissimilar postures takes up two-thirds of the body.
