14.5cm×13.5cm (5 7/8×5 3/8 in)
Made of elegant dense grained huanghuali wood, the slightly waisted cylindrical body rising from a flat base, the wood strikingly figured with irregular concentric circles and of a rich warm patina, the exterior inscribed with a thirty-four-character inscription dating to the jichou year, followed by four artist’s seals carved in low relief.
Huanghuali wood was greatly admired by the elite of Ming and Qing dynasties, while brushpots are amongst the most treasured items of the scholar’s studio. The current one is in good condition, simple yet elegant, of high craftsmanship, fully displaying the aesthetic taste of scholars of that time.
