Ancient Pagoda in the Melting of Snow
In 1953, 17 years old Pang came to Beijing with his father Pang Xunqin and entered the Central Academy of Fine Arts to study painting. He spent 27 years there until he moved to Hong Kong and Taiwan after 1980. He misses the scenery of Beijing's snow time. In 1987, he created Snow on Ancient Pagoda on the theme of White Pagoda, which is on Qionghua Island in Beihai Park. It shows Pang's artistic reconstruction of the scene of the White Pagoda in late winter and early spring. The White Pagoda, built in the early years of the Yuan Dynasty, is the earliest and largest existing Tibetan-style pagoda in China. The ancient pagoda is a covered bowl-like structure with a round shape above. It has patterns of sun, moon, fire, and others, shining with radiance and sacredness towards all directions. Artist uses a rare near-square composition to show the special perspective, from high to low. The overlapping eaves shape a strong sense of sublime, creating the depth and breadth of the space. The white snow covers the red tiles and green eaves. With a vigorous posture, the proud pines and cypresses surround the solemn and sacred temple. Northern snow scenery has a special gray tone characteristic, highlighting the solemnity of the hundreds-year-old white pagoda over hundreds of years. Pang illustrates the charm of the reborn ancient and the eternal beauty of the Beihai Park in his memories.
